Season 1 – Week 7 Recap

LATE MODELS:
This past week the Short Track Pro Cup ran their two Sunday night Late Model races at the unique three-cornered Concord Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. Twenty-four drivers gridded between STPC’s three divisions and found an evening of fun, close racing at North Carolina’s Tricky Triangle.

The Premier and Developmental Divisions raced together as usual, forming a 15-car field. In Premier, things turned out much as they have for this entire season: Jeremy Davis won the pole and led 82 laps en route to his third straight win and fifth of the season, with a pair of Jeffs behind him–Conover in second, and Ford in third. As for Developmental, Brandon Simmons continued his strong season by starting at the head of the division, but Douglas Cormier used his steady, smooth driving style to move to the front and win the class, with Gary Wertman 3.27 seconds behind in second place and Simmons hanging on for third.

But he never pulled away from the field for long, and Chuck Charter finished second only 0.8 seconds behind. Trevor Cameron had his best finish of the year in third, Chris Forster was fourth, and John Bage was fifth.

THIS WEEK:
LATE MODELS:
This week, STPC’s Late Model Pro Cup heads north to the “Indianapolis of the East,” Thompson International Speedway in Thompson, Connecticut. Thompson is a fast, high-banked five-eighths-mile oval that’s been a crown jewel of short-track racing for over seventy years. The 26-degree banking helps keep speeds high and racing tight.

Last season, Premier did not run Thompson. In Sportsman, Jeff Ford led a 19-car field off the grid and dominated a caution-filled race, leading 149 of 150 laps to win over Barry Brooks and Chuck Carter.

MODIFIEDS:
The RH2Way.com Radios SK Modified Series will brave Thunder Valley this coming Monday and race at Bristol Motor Speedway. There may be those who say that the new progressive banking has “ruined” the track for the big boys of NASCAR, but the SK Modifieds are right at home on the high banks, blasting around the .533 miles in less than sixteen seconds. One thing’s for sure, it won’t be dull!

Last season in Week 11, Jacob Klein charged from the back of the field to take a 2/3-lap victory over Scott Adams.

TRACK FACTS:
Track: Bristol Motor Speedway, Bristol, TN
Opened: 1961
Length: 0.533 miles (0.858 km)
