Season 1 – Week 5 Recap

LATE MODELS:
This past week STPC’s Late Model drivers left the warm environs of Florida for the pine forests of Maine and racing at the shortest track they’ll see, Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine, and the fifth round of the STPC Late Model Pro Cup season. This three-eighths-mile almost-circular track is unique for its lack of outside walls and almost nonexistent straightaways. Love it or hate it–and there’s no middle ground–Oxford provided a real challenge for STPC’s Late Model drivers on Sunday.

The Premier and Developmental Divisions combined fields yet again this week for their 100-lap feature event, and it went caution-free the entire way. Jeremy Davis, unsurprisingly, ran to the pole and dominated at a track that he’s traditionally been very strong at, leading every lap on his way to a 6.18-second win over Jeff Ford, with John-Michael Shenette placing third. In Developmental, Brandon Simmons ran away from the rest of the class and won by a staggering two laps over Douglas Cormier in second and Bobby Tomer in third.

The Sportsman Division’s 125-lap feature didn’t go “clean and green” the whole way like the other race did, but with only 4 cautions for 23 laps, there was still plenty of tight green flag racing. Chris Forster put himself on the pole with Chad Arnold on the outside of the front row. Five different drivers led laps during the race. In the end, after a late caution bunched the field, Chad Arnold led the final sprint to the finish line and won by 0.173 seconds over Larry Hale, with Chuck Carter third. Chad is the fifth different winner in Sportsman’s five races so far this year.

THIS WEEK:
LATE MODELS:
This week, STPC’s Late Model Pro Cup will shift from the shortest track of the season to the longest. From the “friendly” confines of Oxford, the Late Models will travel west to the seven-eighths-mile Rusty-Wallace-designed Iowa Speedway. This track is practically a superspeedway to a 400-horsepower Late Model, and with turn entry speeds exceeding 150 mph and at least two usable racing grooves, Iowa will really let the V8s turn all that power loose for high-speed side-by-side racing.

Last season in Premier, Jeremy Davis charged from the back of the field to lead 60 of 100 laps and win by almost four seconds over Ronnie Binkley. In Sportsman, Jeff Ford sat on the pole and led flag-to-flag, but still barely squeaked out a win over Eddie George.
